Shop Talk: Meet Seconds Eco Store

Posted on

Next in our series called Shop Talk, where we highlight one of our retail partners that carry Urban Junket goods, we are visiting Seconds Eco Store of Taos, New Mexico. Seconds Eco Store is a brick-and-mortar boutique specializing in sustainable goods. They search the world for the best in recycled, solar, artisan, and just plain smart products. Connecting the people with these options in one easy place is their passion.

Their mission is.......

To bring a new clean to recycling

To amuse and astound with recycled products of great design

To remind everyone that small acts can add up to big changes

To introduce kids (of all ages) to the magic of solar power so that they may change the world

To bring a little fun back into being GREEN

To change your world . . . in SECONDS!

Sara Basehart from Seconds Eco Store gave us answers to the following questions.

What makes your store unique from other boutiques/gift shops/apparel stores?
At Seconds we mix recycled industrial goods with solar powered gizmos. That means your bags next to giant bowls made of bicycle chains, solar radios, and lots of other beautifully made, useful, recycled and solar powered creations.

Other than Urban Junket, what is your favorite line in your store right now?
My gallery boutique is filled with things I've fallen in love with or made myself, so everything in there is my fave! I can say that two people who have really impressed me with their genius lately are Arturo Buenrostro de la Cueva from Imaginearte, with his incredible pop top creations, and Stewart Stand who created fabric from 85% recycled steel and makes wallets from it. They are two of my newest artists and I haven't gotten over how crazy cool they are!

What is your favorite Urban Junket bag? Why?
I would say the Jen Crossbody. Not just because it's a sleek design and the perfect size, but also because it was the first Urban Junket bag I ever saw. A woman walked into my store with that purse and it was love at first sight. When she told me that it had recycled content, I was on the phone the same day with you guys!

What trends are you seeing for Summer?
I'm noticing a sort of Urban Bohemian flair going on in the Southwest. Soft embroidered blouses and distressed skinny jeans with killer boots or wedges, and an emphasis on statement bags and jewelry. We are seeing our best sales in large playful earrings and your colorful bags, especially ones big enough to carry small laptops. Fashionable girls still gotta work!

What unique items would be we surprised to find in your handbag?
Oh boy, as a mom and a crafter you'll probably find more Matchbox trucks than makeup, and I'm sure to have whatever tool is my latest favorite. Right now that would be small flat edge metal snips. I collect bits of things all day too, from pop tops to plastic lids for my ever ongoing art projects.

What’s the one thing that keeps shoppers coming back to your store?
We are a fun and unique little store in the best place on earth- Taos, NM. The world of handcrafted recycled art is always evolving, so it's a new experience every time you visit. Our favorite saying is that everything in our store is for sale, but all the ideas are free. Come in and get inspired to make something!
