Shop Talk: Meet The Gathered Earth
Continuing our series called Shop Talk, where we highlight one of our retail partners that carry Urban Junket goods, today we are visitng The Gathered Earth of Appleton, Wisconsin. The Gathered Earth is a charming store that not only carries some very unique lines, but also offers events and workshops for the artist in you. At The Gathered Earth they are guided by three simple words...
Gather, Create, Reveal
By Gathering a collection of uncommon gifts, vintage items and home decor, they have created a comfortable and inspiring space to help you reveal your unique spirit. Their goal is to provide outstanding customer service while bringing unique nature inspired gifts closer to their customers.
We talked to Erica Smith to find out what makes The Gathered Earth special to their customers.
What makes your store unique from other boutiques? I think The Gathered Earth is set apart from many boutiques and stores in a couple of ways. First, we started as a gift shop in a garden center so it has always been important for us to carry things that are nature inspired either in appearance or by being earth friendly whenever possible. Secondly, almost all of the items we carry in the shop have a story. Maybe it is how it is made, where it is made, how the company started, etc. and we pride ourselves on being as knowledgeable as possible when it comes to those stories. Our clients like knowing what the products they are drawn to are all about.
Other than Urban Junket, what is your favorite line in your store right now? I have two. The first is a new soap line for us called Finchberry. The look is fun, bright, bold colors with glittery accents, wonderful scents and fun names like Herb-N Chaos and Past Curfew. It is made in the US, vegan and preservative free. The second is Tula hats. It is a fair trade company that distributes out of Texas. The hats are made in Mexico and are constructed out of palm which is a durable and sustainable fiber. Not only do they have UVA/UVB protection of 50+ but they have super cute and current styles for both men and women.
What is your favorite Urban Junket bag? Why? Currently it is the Gracie because that is the bag that started it all. I picked it up at Unfurl while vacationing in Manzanita, OR and it took me three days to talk myself into buying it (only because I was trying to decide between the Gracie and the Jen). I’m so glad I didn’t just throw up my hands and walk away completely. Not only did it help keep me better organized when traveling back but the thoughtful design made me want to dig deeper into the company. Over all the Gracie is a great bag. The size is perfect for people who like a slightly larger bag but it isn’t so large that you inadvertently overload. The scarlet color I purchased it in is more versatile than some may think but the ability to convert it from a handbag to a crossbody is what gave Gracie the win.
What trends are you seeing for Summer? I will admit that we don’t pay too much attention to trends. We have found that our clients seem to like it when we follow our gut so that is what we will continue to do. It is a win/win.
What unique items would we be surprised to find in your handbag? I don’t know how unique it is but I always have a fingernail clipper. Nothing worse than a broken nail and no way to take care of it.
What’s the one thing that keeps shoppers coming back to your store? The uniqueness of what we carry and our customer service hands down.
